The Cinquain: A format created by the American poet Adelaide Crapsey. A compressive five line poem that is great fun to use, and can help the thought process.
Meter and rhyme have no place in this style, which is all down to the number of syllables per line. The poem takes the format:
2 syllables
4 syllables
6 syllables
8 syllables
2 syllables
Thats it!
I have written the following as an example :
The Winter Bully
Thick snow
smothers detail
blanches with its excess
confronts with a singular view
then melts.
